Nka Ikem Esit is a volunteer-run, non-profit organization established on September 12, 1993, in Washington, D.C., by Efik indigenes residing primarily in the tri-state area of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia.
The name of the association came out of the resolve by the founding members (Mrs. Margaret Edet-Nnorom, Ms. Gloria Effiong, Mrs. Atai Nyambi, the late Mr. Samuel Ndiyo, Mr. Derrick Ekanem, and Dr. Chris B. Effiong)- envisioned a legacy of purposeful action and cultural preservation. From its inception, Nka Ikem Esit has been driven by a deep commitment to cultural pride, service, and transcontinental impact — supporting minority communities in the United States and indigenes in Calabar, and the larger Cross River State of Nigeria
Other members who joined the association at its formative stage include Dr. (Mrs.) Rosemary Effiong, Chief Emmanuel Duke, Mr. Samuel Eyo, Mrs. Obo Akinbola, Mr. Charles Effiong, and Mrs. Patricia Udo.
The association was formally launched on July 2, 1994. The membership since launching has continued to grow strong, consisting of committed individuals with vested interests in the well being and progress of the Efik community. The organization garners strength from the special admission of at-large members, who reside outside the Washington-DC metropolitan area, into the association. The philosophical strength of the organization, determination and persistence, is embodied in its logo designed by Mr. Charles Effiong.
Nka Ikem Esit is one of nine active chapters/networks under the umbrella of the Efik National Association, Inc. (ENA Inc.).
Our mission is to serve, uplift, and empower the Efik people and other minorities through programs organized around four foundational pillars:
Nka Ikem Esit is more than a cultural group — it is a bridge between continents. As one of the oldest consistently running ethnic organizations in the Washington DC area, Nka is a visionary organization, a lifeline for communities in need, and a champion of tradition in a modern world. Through collaboration, compassion, and commitment, it continues to shape a legacy of leadership and hope.
Over three decades, Nka Ikem Esit has led a wide range of programs in the areas of education, health, disaster relief, crisis response, youth empowerment, and international aid:
Scholarships for underprivileged students for 10 consecutive years; a 3-year grant to a Frostburg State University student after the sudden loss of her parent. The organization completed several book fairs and back to school campaigns in the DC area.
Three community health fairs serving over 600 families in Langley Park, MD; dental, pediatric, and adult screenings; free books and hygiene kits. Collaboration with the national body for three medical missions. Medical supplies and medications to University Teaching Hospital and several clinics and churches in the Calabar metropolitan area.
Donations to the American Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina/Rita victims, as well as donations to local communities impacted by fire and flooding.
Emergency funding for an Efik woman in need of a kidney transplant.
Financial support for a container of medical equipment delivered to hospitals in Cross River State, Nigeria (via NWAG).
Organized a White House tour for Efik youth from across the U.S.
We work collaboratively, dedicating their time and resources to drive meaningful progress and positive change within the community.
We also strive to promote and preserve our culture.
We contribute to the development of youth and young adults through investment in educational activities and book fairs.
We have a steadfast commitment to preservation of Efik cultural heritage through dynamic events, cross-generational outreach and creative programming.
We add value in our communities through health fairs, provision of medical supplies and participation in medical missions.
We support programs and promote economic independence, vocational readiness, and access to opportunities, especially for underserved communities in Nigeria and the United States.
Our projects cover the DC metropolis (DC, Maryland and Virginia) and our homeland in Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria.
We maintain an open line of communication with other ENA Inc chapters and partner by providing financial and logistical support.
